Valentine’s Day: Getting past Muslim romance stereotypes

Posted on February 14, 2012 by (Published for 95 days)

So a good Muslim girl meets a guy through her parents, the only ?dates? they have are chaperoned, and sex before marriage? Forget about it.

?Right?

?I?m an unmarried, Muslim non-virgin,? writes Insiya Ansari, a writer from San Francisco. ?I?ve said it aloud.?

?And no, I wasn?t married or engaged to be married, or even in an exclusive relationship,? writes Zahra Noorbakhsh, a first generation Iranian-American comedian.

And then there?s Tanzila Ahmed, who has an affair with a Muslim punk rocker with a Mohawk whose band she follows across the country. And Tolu Adiba, who fights her homosexuality, then moves in with a girlfriend, who was herself married to a man.

This Valentine?s Day, peek into the love lives of 25 American Muslim women navigating love and religion in ?Love, InshAllah,? an intimate, brutally honest anthology by writers Ayesha Mattu and Nura Maznavi. The stories sweep aside stereotypes about subservient Muslim girls entering into arranged marriages and show the myriad ways Muslim women look for ? and find ? love. (The word ?InshAllah? in the book?s title is Arabic for ?God willing,? a phrase frequently used by Muslims.)

After successfully pitching their idea at Pitchapalooza 2010, a literary festival in the Bay Area where writers get a few minutes to pitch book ideas to a panel of industry veterans, the pair secured agents and then a publishing contract with Soft Skull Press in Berkeley, Calif.? When they began soliciting submissions from across the US, mainly through social media, Mattu and Maznavi were astonished by the response. They got around 200 submissions, from women with origins in East Africa, the Middle East, the subcontinent, and American converts, with a range of ages, professions, and sexual orientations. And the essays displayed a candor typically unseen in the Muslim community, an openness that surprised even the book?s editors, Mattu and Maznavi.

?I felt like we hit a chord,? Mattu told the Religion News Service.

Adds Maznavi, there ?really hasn?t been the space to discuss these issues publicly, and openly and honestly? There?s been a lot of fear in the community ? fear of judgment, fear of disapproval, and I think that manifested itself in a lot of self censorship and people not feeling comfortable to talk about these issues, even with very, very close friends.?

By the time submission calls came for ?Love InshAllah,? ?I felt like women were ready to talk about these stories,? says Mattu.

And talk they did, from a heartbreaking story by Leila Khan about losing her fianc? because he condemned Islam and lumped all Muslims together as terrorists, to a sweet tale by Huda al-Marashi, a first generation Iraqi-American, about adjusting her fairy tale expectations of love when she enters into a semi-arranged marriage.

The book, says Mattu, challenges pre-conceived notions about Muslim women by allowing the women to speak for themselves.

?There are still misconceptions about Muslim women, because Muslim women, their bodies, their lives, have been so caught up in political debate,? she told the RNS. ?I feel like this is a way for people to connect with women who are revealing their full humanity.?

Housing a “significant headwind” to recovery: Fed’s Pianalto (Reuters)

Posted on February 11, 2012 by (Published for 98 days)

CLEVELAND, Ohio (Reuters) ? The housing market is holding back the broader economic recovery now that foreclosures have become “a national crisis,” a top Federal Reserve official said on Friday.

“Housing market issues pose a significant headwind to our economic recovery,” said Cleveland Fed President Sandra Pianalto, a voter this year on the Fed’s policy-setting panel.

“Specifically, losses in housing wealth have held back consumer spending, sapped household confidence and reduced the ability of small-business owners to obtain credit.”

The debate both inside and outside of the central bank has intensified this year over what if anything it should do to boost the sector that is the biggest drag on the tentative U.S. rebound.

Pianalto’s speech came shortly after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, in Washington on Friday, issued a call to action to restore the housing market, saying depressed house prices and sales are a serious drag on the economic recovery.

On Thursday, big U.S. banks accused of abusive mortgage practices agreed to a $25 billion government settlement that may help a million borrowers, though they are a fraction of those hit hard by the drop in home values.

A 33 percent decline in U.S. housing prices since 2006 has resulted in an estimated $7 trillion loss of household wealth, and about 12 million U.S. homeowners are currently underwater on their mortgages.

Pianalto is considered a moderate policy “dove” who usually votes along with Bernanke. She did so two weeks ago when the Fed’s policy-setting committee sketched a difficult path ahead for the economy and said it expects to keep rates “exceptionally low” at least through the end of 2014 to help the recovery.

The Fed has bought some $2.3 trillion in long-term securities – including mortgage-related assets – and has kept the door open to buying more. That possibility has drawn criticism from some Fed officials and Republican lawmakers, who accuse it of overstretching and focusing on only one sector of the economy.

Addressing a housing-services audience here, Pianalto added: “I can assure you that I see the consequences of our housing market challenges both as a resident of northeast Ohio and in my role as a Federal Reserve policymaker.”

Pianalto’s Midwestern district has been hard hit by the housing slump, and her speech was delivered in a refurbished hall in a neighborhood where many houses had broken or boarded windows, fallen tiles and rusted fences.

K-9 Knitter: TMT – on Thursday for once!!

Posted on February 11, 2012 by (Published for 99 days)

1. Robin wants to know what your ideal number of dogs is?

2-3. A youngster that needs training, a middle dog that is pretty well trained and an oldster.

I like to have 3-4 years in between dogs so the older ones are lower maintenance and I can spend extra time with the youngster. Also so I don’t have all my dogs getting old all at once.

Right now Kenzi is 3 and Kipp is 7 so I’m thinking about the possibility of adding another dog in the next year or so…

2. Lora wants to know if you find that your dogs are better or worse after time off from training?

I think it depends on what I’m training. I like doing stupid pet tricks just for some fun, no pressure training. The dogs like doing something and who cares if you get it wrong? So we do those pretty frequently.

When we’re doing “real” work, I like to take some time off every now and then (a couple weeks here and there) and the dogs seem to come back with more enthusiasm and they never seem to regress much.

3. What is your favorite power tool? What power tool do you wish you had?

Cordless drill. So.very.versatile! I dunno on the second part. I’ve got a dad and a couple brothers with well stocked shops so I think I could find anything I needed there…

4. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to have a farm/ranch. I still want to have that farm or ranch! Currently working on a degree that may be to prove versatile enough to have that farm/ranch and a work from home job on the side.

5. How many of your friends are not “dog people”?

A few (I’ve got knitting friends too!!), but all of my non-dog friends get the dog thing. Or at least they get how important the dog thing is to me. That works for me. I think good friends respect your interests because they’re important to you, not becasue they really care about them. So as long as they don’t call me crazy for hauling dogs around in the back of my car, or getting out in all kinds of weather to train, etc, etc, I’m good with that!

New Music Indiana: Crys – Musical Family Tree

Posted on February 10, 2012 by (Published for 99 days)

Crys’ MFT page (listen while you read)

Testing…one…testing…

You’re asleep in another’s dreams, letting them carry you. You see a sunflower surrounding the tombstone of a beloved cat. Psychic visions, hallucinatory imagery, hairs stand on end, a nervous tick, and a slight sense of relief when the music is over. You may now return to your normal state of consciousness.

Born and bred on Fountain Square sunshine and I-65 exhaust and acidrainbows, Crys are a 3 piece kraut-psych outfit from Indianapolis. First, I question whether they are really a 3 piece. There is something more going on than meets the ears, ghostly sounds fill the room as the rhythm section alternates between deep, opiate grooves and fine tuned, motorik pulses. Voices swirl, swampland spirits are conjured, CCR is fed LSD, and these kids are in a haze so deep I begin to question whether they are from Indiana or somewhere deep in space.

Baptized by groove in Strawberry Fields and Communion with the dead.?Crys are a legitimate force in the growing Fountain Square arts scene. Calling Fountain Square’s gallery-venue?Shared Heritage?their home, Crys hone into their surroundings: the pulsing of I-65 traffic, the eerie-drone of sirens off in the distance, the dark vibes of playground rituals, and the creepy silence that gets beneath your skin when walking down Morris St. in the night.

Jacob Gardner, Crys’ bassist and singer and founder of the colossal?Cataracts Music Festival, seems to be channeling the voices that fill Roky Erikson’s head, grotesque creatures, exorcised from bums in a train yard.?Joey Shepard, Crys’ drummer, serves the kraut and with a minimalist recipe and large portions. His mind wonders to oblivion as he pounds on and on, keeping you hungry, stirring a nostalgia for your virgin listens through Tago Mago and Neu! 2,?carrying the spacious and swirling leads of the band’s own psychedelic guru, Mitch Duncan, through altered states of rock and roll consciousness, again and again and again and again…

I’ve been around since the inception of Crys, and their music is still hard for me to grasp. It’s an atypical twist on one of my favorite musical formulas, repetition.?Lou Reed?said, “Let there be White Light,” and there was.?Crys saw the light and saw that it was good, and turned it back to its primordial darkness, covering the entirety of the surrounding space and time with deep cutting, heavy fervor for all who will listen.

Hard economic times sharpen Spaniards’ sneaky side (AP)

Posted on February 9, 2012 by (Published for 100 days)

MADRID ? Leather seats are disappearing from cars. Precious jewels are vanishing from drawers. TVs are spirited out of homes in the dead of night.

These crimes are not what they seem. And the perpetrators are not the usual suspects.

The culprits are everyday Spaniards reporting thefts of valuables, then filing bogus insurance claims. The scams vary but they share an often slapdash nature and a pressing goal: scrape together a few extra euros as harsh economic times bite.

“What we have noticed because of the crisis is domestic, amateur fraud. People who are not criminals, who have a lightbulb go off in their head and attempt fraud that is small in monetary terms but above all stupid,” said Javier Fernandez, who represents a federation of Spanish insurance companies.

It’s all a sign of increasing desperation in Spain as unemployment creeps up toward 23 percent, austerity measures sting and officials forecast economic gloom for years to come.

The targets of all this sneaky creativity do not stop at insurers. Sloppily forged monthly passes are cropping up on Madrid buses. Once upstanding citizens are taking part in Internet swindles that seek fees for non-existing services or products. In one case, police say, a man faked his own kidnapping in a botched attempt to secure ransom money from his own brother.

Other older, tried-and-true scams are also on the rise, like going through someone’s mailbox, grabbing a bank statement and using the account number and a fake ID to get cash from a teller, said Madrid lawyer Jose Ramon Ventura, who has defended both victims and perpetrators of fraud.

“This kind of thing is on the rise across the board,” he said. National Police confirm petty fraud cases have shot up in the crisis, but have no specific figures.

Fernandez said that in 2010, the last year for which his association UNESPA has complete numbers, fraudulent insurance claims rose 16 percent from the previous year, and most were amateur jobs.

Spaniards have a long, rich and colorful history of ripping each other off. Indeed, the con artist ? the rascal living off his wits, cutting corners with sly, artful flair ? is an archetype of Spanish culture. It is met not so much with disdain as perhaps a hint of amusement and even begrudging respect.

But today’s crushing economic crisis is spawning a new breed of reluctant scheister ? one more likely to inspire pity than admiration.

“What has emerged are fraudsters acting out of need,” said Jose Antonio Perez, a private investigator who sniffs out fraud for Spanish insurers and says his workload has fattened by up to 45 percent since the crisis began a few years ago with the collapse of a real estate bubble.

The head of a National Police anti-fraud unit in Usera, a gritty working-class neighborhood of Madrid, said a typical scam on the rise there is for people to report their wallets or purses stolen in a mugging and claim they held euro300 ($400) or euro400 ($530) ? the maximum amount usually covered for such robberies under Spanish homeowners insurance policies.

But when people come to the police to make a report, it often raises eyebrows because “these days there are not many people walking around Usera with euro400 on them,” the official said.

And as lots of these people are absolute beginners when it comes to criminal cheating, they can’t go through with it once they are being questioned in a police station and making a signed statement that they can be prosecuted if it’s proven they’re lying.

“In the end, they break down and tell us they made it all up,” said the plainclothes police official, who asked that his name not be used, for security reasons.

Spaniards have a word for ? and long-standing fascination with ? this kind of roguish character: ‘picaro.’ A genre of literature known as the picaresque novel is generally credited as having arisen in Spain with an anonymous 16th-century work entitled “Lazarillo de Tormes.”

It traces the life and adventures of a poor, hungry boy named Lazaro who is on his own and gets by the best he can. At one point, taken in by a mean clergyman, he secretly gnaws on stored loaves of bread to make the priest think there are mice at work, then gets those pieces of bread all to himself.

To this day, in Spain and other Latin cultures, such rascals enjoy a degree of prestige, according to Spanish sociologist Alberto Moncada.

The current fraud wave, he said, is a survival technique that stems in part from Spaniards’ Catholic roots and what he called their belief that God’s a softy.

“For Protestants, life is all about merit, about service. We, on the other hand, have the feeling that God is going to forgive us for everything we do,” he said in an interview.

In 2010, as Spain’s conservative Popular Party was being battered by a corruption scandal ahead of regional and municipal elections, Moncada predicted voters wouldn’t punish the party at the polls because of forgiving attitudes toward underhand dealings.

He was right. The conservatives won big.

“The picaro is more a clever guy who is respected than a thief who is scorned. Spain is not Germany,” Moncada wrote in the newspaper El Pais.

Perez, head of an agency called Cosmos Detectives, has a list of stories as long as his arm: people whose homes are burgled and inflate the theft report to include virtually everything they own, from clothes to household knickknacks to used razors and shampoo. Some people fake burglaries or muggings altogether.

One man reported his car seats stolen, with no sign of forced entry on the vehicle, and tried to sell them on eBay, offering his cell phone number to prospective customers.

“We called him up and he tried to sell us the seats,” said Perez, whose office is overflowing with Sherlock Holmes paraphernalia such as a statue of the fictional sleuth and a coffee table covered with antique magnifying glasses and pipes.

Then there was the clean-cut looking man in his late 20s who reported a euro500 ($670) iPhone stolen in a mugging, and told Perez the first thing he did was call police. But with what phone, if his was snatched away?

During a chat with the man at a coffee shop, Perez concealed his own mobile phone in his pants pocket ? with the man’s number punched in and ready to be dialed with the touch of a button. When Perez called, the man instinctively reached into his coat for his “stolen” phone and answered it.

“It was one of those moments. His face said, ‘Uh-oh. I screwed up,’” Perez said. The detective said he told the insurance company what happened and it’s up to them to decide whether to cancel the man’s policy.

“Of course you feel sorry for him. But it is a matter of him telling the truth,” Perez said. “He said I had to understand, that he was in dire straits, that he was jobless. He said please, I had to understand. I had to understand.”

After U.S. oil snub, Canada focuses on China (Reuters)

Posted on February 9, 2012 by (Published for 101 days)

OTTAWA (Reuters) ? Canada will focus on exporting oil and other goods to China and other booming Asian economies even if Washington overturns its decision to block a pipeline that would have sent more Canadian crude to the United States.

Speaking ahead of Canada’s most high-powered trade mission to Beijing for almost 15 years, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Reuters that Canada must focus on markets that are growing, regardless of the fate of the Keystone XL pipeline, which is proposed to carry crude from the Alberta oil sands to Texas refineries.

The U.S. State Department blocked Keystone last month, saying the didn’t have time for a thorough environmental review.

“I think we need to be clear. As much as I want to see that Keystone project proceed, I think this incident … underscore(s) the fact that it is in this country’s national interest to be able to sell products beyond the United States,” Harper told Reuters in an interview.

“And I don’t think a reversal of an American decision can change that fundamental reality. So I think it is absolutely essential that we find ways of being able to sell our products to the biggest growing markets in the world, and those are in Asia.”

Canada – the largest supplier of energy to the United States – was profoundly disappointed by Washington’s decision to veto TransCanada Corp’s Keystone project. The United States – which is by far Canada’s largest trading partner – is unlikely to look at it again until next year.

At 170 billion barrels, Canada’s oil sands are the third-largest crude deposit in the world, and Canadian exports to bigger markets will be a focal point of Harper’s meetings in China, where he will be accompanied by five cabinet ministers and the heads of major corporations seeking business.

China has already made clear it would like to import Canadian oil to help power its rapidly expanding economy.

China does not currently import Canadian crude. Enbridge Inc wants to build a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific but it could take years to approve and complete the project.

China’s international oil firms, taking a more long-term view, have spent or pledged to invest more than C$11 billion ($11.1 billion) in Canada’s energy patch since 2005.

TOP LEVEL MEETINGS

During his trip Harper will meet President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao as well as two important regional players – Chongqing Communist Party chief Bo Xilai and Wang Yang, the chief of Guangdong province.

The Canadian mission, which will arrive in Beijing on Tuesday, is the largest of its kind since 1998. Guests include top executives from Shell Canada, Enbridge and Canadian Oil Sands as well as uranium producer Cameco Corp and mining firm Teck Resources Ltd.

Other firms include plane and train maker Bombardier Inc, Air Canada, Eldorado Gold Corp, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc, Canfor Corp and West Fraser Timber Co Ltd.

The size of the delegation is another sign of how Harper’s Conservatives have shifted position to embrace China. The Conservatives came to power in 2006 harboring suspicions about Beijing’s human rights record.

Harper skipped the 2008 Beijing Olympics and did not travel to China until late 2009, when Wen admonished him publicly for taking so long to visit. Hu came to Canada the next year, when the two men set a target of boosting trade.

In 2010, Canadian exports to China were worth C$13.2 billion while imports totaled C$44.5 billion. Bilateral Canada-U.S. trade in 2010 was just under C$557 billion.

Harper cited problems in the United States and Europe as a reason for focusing on Asia medium-term growth potential.

“That doesn’t mean we’re going to pass on the developed world … but I think all the experts agree that the prospects for the greatest global growth are in Asia and we want to make sure we exploit this,” he said.

He denied the suggestion he had softened his tone on human rights over the years in the interest of boosting trade.

“There are obviously human rights and other specific consular cases that are of some significant concern to this government and we raise those things regularly … and we will continue to do that,” he said.

Last year Canada deported China’s most wanted man, Lai Changxing, after a decades-long legal battle. Beijing accuses Lai of running a multibillion-dollar smuggling ring.

In 2007, China jailed Uighur-Canadian Huseyin Celil on terrorism charges. Celil fled China in the mid-1990s and obtained Canadian citizenship, but Beijing sees him as Chinese.

Harper’s spokesman declined to comment on reports that China would agree to lend two pandas to the Toronto Zoo, but added cryptically: “I wouldn’t wear your bamboo undershorts if you’re coming to Chongqing.”
